Talking through trauma and PTSD

A lifetime of pain

A lifetime of pain

Bare with my while I share this, my brain is flooded with thoughts so things might be a bit messy with how they are written.

TW: Disclosure of abuse (SA), suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

Content/trigger warning

From a young age I was exposed to being physically and sexually abused, combine that with the emotional abuse and it's left me with lifelong trauma. I was made to believe it was my fault, that it wasn't that bad, that it didn't matter and that I shouldn't talk about it. These incidents happened while I was in a Christian school, at different ages by different aged groups of men some my age at the time being 9 years old others being older than me, there were students, teachers, strangers that I didn't know. It never seemed to end, it went on for years with no indication that it was ever going to stop, how was I to get myself out of this, who would listen, who would believe me when my voice didn't matter. It only ended when I left school, I had to, I couldn't stay there, I couldn't keep being hurt.

Fast forward a while and I found relationships but I wasn't looking for a partner but rather a father figure something I had lacked all my life. This lead to being further abused as I sought out men that were considerably older than me, wanting to felt cared for, to feel safe but instead I was hurt. So I escaped one lot of abuse only to continue to experience another, was this all my life was going to be like, was this what I deserved, was this just normal?

All my life I've sought friendships that have been of varying age groups for different reasons. Younger friends to feel as though I had siblings to grow up with and so that i still felt like i had a childhood, older friends so that I felt like I had an auntie or a mother figure that cared and wanted to protect me. Now I find myself alone with only a couple of friends that I communicate with but none that I can physically see due to the distance between us.

Come to today and life's still in shambles, there's still ongoing abuse by various people including a family member. I've been seeking help, trying to learn to live with a lifetime full of trauma, trying to make sense of why it's been like this. It's not easy, trying to find someone that truly understands what I've been through, why I'm the way I am and to then be able to help me to recover if that's at all entirely possible.

I'm grateful that I'm still here given others have tried to fatally hurt me, then there's the attempts of ending my own life. But it's a struggle, flashbacks are triggered by the simplest of things, a word, a smell or taste, a sound, a name it can be anything and it can hit without warning, they can last minutes, hours or even days. I've used self harm to cope throughout my life and still do as it's the one thing I can control when everything else is spiralling around me. I know it's not healthy and I've tried to find other alternatives, sometimes I'm lucky and something will work for a while but then it stops and it's back to square one.

Anyway I think that's enough for now, I'm sorry for the long read and if it's confusing. Thanks for reading and I'm glad I'm here, this community seems to be amazing and supportive so thankyou to everyone I've talked to so far.

@RebelliousAngel bunnikins was so accurate about your nature being one to still feel empathy and bring kindness to others while carrying so much pain and trauma i of your own is a trait to be proud of.

i was wanting to add support to why i had understanding, i know you saying sorry what happened was genuine . when i read it i felt bad and small for after everything you exposed yourself to in your post and were still processing the reality of it might of looked i was comparing.

like if you turn up somewhere and talk about a bird flew into side of car down the road, amd someone remembers the time a pelican flew inside there's.

i don't think much of them people .

iit was tto explain i understood to write that post is hard and then there's still fear of sharing yo go.

i will never know what you feel individually and shared in hope lived experience stops the skeptic doubts of sincerity.

that you don't paint people with same brush as a defence mechanism shows genuine ,humility and strength of charachter. i respect your courage rebellious angel.

thank you for being you

hope you sleep well

Re: A lifetime of pain

Hey @RebelliousAngel thank-you for sharing your story, it’s not easy to do but on reflection I see that you have been going through a pretty intense time right now and your history has been incredibly traumatic and painful.

You are an incredibly strong and courageous person who deserves only the best and as @AuntGlow said safety.
I also want to check that you are living in a safe environment now? You mentioned this family member and recent. Are you okay, re your location? (You don’t have to answer this on the forum if you don’t want to but hope you can let @AuntGlow know or someone if you are not). I am really really glad to hear you have been speaking to 1800 respect, there is also lifeline and suicide callback service.
I am also so glad @rav3n @AuntGlow have been checking in on you plus all our other forum friends.
Do you have any other supports at the moment? Counsellor, or someone on the ground where you are? I am worried about you and want to make sure you are alright. 🙏

But comforted to know @AuntGlow has checked in with you over email.

You are definitely not alone here, we are all sitting with you my friend. Your worth to us is everything and my days are lit up when I see you on the forum, a reaction, a comment, a thread comment to someone else. These don’t go unnoticed, you play such an important role here for us too 🫶

I have also struggled with self harm, suicidal thoughts, I understand and sit here with no judgement. While your distress is high, we are here. I see SH as a side step you are definitely not back at square one, I know you would say similar to others on the forum if this was someone else. You have been so encouraging and supportive to others on this forum, I would like to give you support back like all my other friends on here.

When distress is super high only within the last year after a lifetime history of SH and suicidal thoughts etc had someone mentioned to me the dive reflex- breath hold and Ice pack to my face is the way I feel safest to complete the exercise. Not sure why I didn’t find this healthy technique sooner but really works for me. Sometimes I have to complete this exercise on more than one occasion due to the nervous system reactivating at a high level before it’s meant to (disclaimer I’m actually not sure if you are meant to do it on multiple occasions) but it has kept me safe regardless, a strategy that has actually been effective to reduce my internal distress and despite doing this exercise a lot it has not lost it’s effectiveness for me- it could work for you as long as you are in a physically safe environment when you choose this exercise, hope that makes sense.

Sending everything you need right now, you are not alone and I hope to continue our friendship on the forum and I am sure I speak for everyone here too.

Goodnight for now, I look forward to hearing from you when you are ready 🙏💜

Re: A lifetime of pain

@RebelliousAngel I do hope in time you feel better for having shared. It takes courage and vulnerability. My family and I have many similar experiences and complexities around childhood and sexual abuse. Also complexities around gender. There seems to be a balance between expression and sharing and revisiting trauma and the healing process. Most important is to respect Your emotions. After a big share, it can feel exhausting, unsettling and cathartic, and a relief. Resilience can emerge.

Healing can be a varied and unique process, but there are many things we have in common.

Re: A lifetime of pain

Thanks @AuntGlow, I feel that I need some time to process things. I feel terrible for not being able to reply to everyone. I'm going to put myself to bed for the night, not feeling myself and things are sitting rather uncomfortably tonight. I appreciate all the support and I apologise for being distant and having a hard time communicating.
