Talking through trauma and PTSD

A lifetime of pain

A lifetime of pain

Bare with my while I share this, my brain is flooded with thoughts so things might be a bit messy with how they are written.

TW: Disclosure of abuse (SA), suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

Content/trigger warning

From a young age I was exposed to being physically and sexually abused, combine that with the emotional abuse and it's left me with lifelong trauma. I was made to believe it was my fault, that it wasn't that bad, that it didn't matter and that I shouldn't talk about it. These incidents happened while I was in a Christian school, at different ages by different aged groups of men some my age at the time being 9 years old others being older than me, there were students, teachers, strangers that I didn't know. It never seemed to end, it went on for years with no indication that it was ever going to stop, how was I to get myself out of this, who would listen, who would believe me when my voice didn't matter. It only ended when I left school, I had to, I couldn't stay there, I couldn't keep being hurt.

Fast forward a while and I found relationships but I wasn't looking for a partner but rather a father figure something I had lacked all my life. This lead to being further abused as I sought out men that were considerably older than me, wanting to felt cared for, to feel safe but instead I was hurt. So I escaped one lot of abuse only to continue to experience another, was this all my life was going to be like, was this what I deserved, was this just normal?

All my life I've sought friendships that have been of varying age groups for different reasons. Younger friends to feel as though I had siblings to grow up with and so that i still felt like i had a childhood, older friends so that I felt like I had an auntie or a mother figure that cared and wanted to protect me. Now I find myself alone with only a couple of friends that I communicate with but none that I can physically see due to the distance between us.

Come to today and life's still in shambles, there's still ongoing abuse by various people including a family member. I've been seeking help, trying to learn to live with a lifetime full of trauma, trying to make sense of why it's been like this. It's not easy, trying to find someone that truly understands what I've been through, why I'm the way I am and to then be able to help me to recover if that's at all entirely possible.

I'm grateful that I'm still here given others have tried to fatally hurt me, then there's the attempts of ending my own life. But it's a struggle, flashbacks are triggered by the simplest of things, a word, a smell or taste, a sound, a name it can be anything and it can hit without warning, they can last minutes, hours or even days. I've used self harm to cope throughout my life and still do as it's the one thing I can control when everything else is spiralling around me. I know it's not healthy and I've tried to find other alternatives, sometimes I'm lucky and something will work for a while but then it stops and it's back to square one.

Anyway I think that's enough for now, I'm sorry for the long read and if it's confusing. Thanks for reading and I'm glad I'm here, this community seems to be amazing and supportive so thankyou to everyone I've talked to so far.

I can only imagine @RebelliousAngel 🩵

Yes, that does make sense... hmm, perhaps 'safer' would be a lighter intention?

What's one thing you could do tonight?

I love that you have online friends, they are the best - especially late at night.

Never alone here. 🥰

@RebelliousAngel *safe virtual hugs*

It wasn't/isn't your fault.

It was/is bad that you had to experience that.

It does matter. And you matter.

And you are welcome to talk about it. And I hope if you talk about it, that it can help with your healing process (and maybe even help others in theirs too).

Thank you for sharing. I know how hard it has been for you to do so. I understood what you wrote with ease.

Holding all that inside, and living with the emotional stress and ongoing effects of it and how it impacts the body physically also... no wonder you are exhausted. Being triggered often would be so exhausting I imagine.

I accept you. 😊. I care. I will listen. I will not judge. I will not blame you.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@REDLINEZ750 thanks for your reply, it was hard to write it as it felt like I was living through it again as I did. But I am thankful that I shared it, it helps to feel less alone, to know that my feelings do matter.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I'm sorry things were like that for you.

Please know that I accept everyone regardless of age, gender/identity etc. I might have been hurt by many people the majority being male but that doesn't mean that I put all males in the same basket. I value and appreciate your support so thank you 🩵

Re: A lifetime of pain

@DownMoreThanUp thanks for your support. Loving yourself after such traumatic experiences feels like an unachievable goal, I doubt myself on so many levels, at times I loathe myself, I look at myself and think how could anyone love me but then I realise that it's not about anyone else loving me but me trying to love or even simply like myself. The pain feels just as real today as it has in those other times, the fear I live with every day is debilitating and makes doing the simplest of tasks feel impossible.

Thanks for your kind words, I appreciate your care and compassion 🩵

Re: A lifetime of pain

@avant-garde thank you hun, it was reading your story that gave me the courage to share here 🩵.

I like how you worded that about the concept of feeling safe, you're right it never truly feels that way but I do feel safer here knowing that I'm not alone and that people care.

I couldn't have said that better myself, my body really felt as if it was in shock, I had to take some time to step back and allow my mind and body to process everything. I am feeling a bit better now and just remembering to be gentle with myself.

Thank you for your support hun, I'm grateful to have met you here 🩵

@Bunniekins thank you bun 🩵. You've shown me so much kindness, your words make me feel cared for and supported. I don't feel strong but when you say it a part of me believes it, a part that says you've survived everything that life has thrown your way and you're still here. Thank you, I appreciate you so much 🩵.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@AuntGlow I think 'safer' is better.

Tonight I've become one with my bed, I've been listening to some music and allowing myself some time to just be.

I am feeling exhausted after today so I'm thinking I'll have an early night and hopefully wake up feeling refreshed and ready to face whatever tomorrow holds.

Thanks for the support 🩵

@AlwaysMyself thanks for the hugs 🩵.

Your words mean so much to me and I appreciate your support and understanding.

I feel as though I am exhausted 99% of the time and that little 1% that I'm not is when I push myself to get as much done as I can.

Thank you again 🩵

Re: A lifetime of pain

@RebelliousAngel You are welcome. Please know i will never judge you, it is not judgement, but love, care and nurture that you need to heal from the abuse you been through.

You are very important, even as you have turned out to be. You matter, no matter what your damaged feelings are telling you.

It is about giving yourself a break and accepting who you have become by letting true love change you into who you truly are at heart, and not being hard on yourself, not to be who you truly are.

While us numbing our feelings, is simple telling us we need to ease the pain not being loved, rather than add to our burdens, denying ourselves some slack.

Not sure how you feel about me sharing this poem with you, but this is one of my responses to those hurting bad life down deep.

To Those Depressed,

To think less of yourself than Life's offspring.
Brings you much inner pain and suffering.
Your worth is incredibly high for you live life!
As you received reality living Being as well.

Depression is what nasty lies bring alive inside,
our down let a low-self-esteem our good life rob.
Untruths roaming freely through heart and mind
Evil lies extinguishing all our happiness and fun.

Yet loving true brings us always more good life!
While to believe lies always bring pain and grief.
So hold onto the truth of love letting you be you.
No longer let malicious lies good life squander.

For taking hold of truthful love loves bad life away
Every mind ruled by love is safe from lies that hurt.
The truth of love will always comfort hurting hearts
Lovingly remaking any hurting reality anew for good.

Re: A lifetime of pain

Thank you for sharing your story @RebelliousAngel

It was very brave and I'm sure extremely difficult to do.

I'm sorry that you suffered as you did.

I am glad you are still here.

I don't think I have interacted with you, but have read your posts which are always so lovely and supportive.

I hope you are back on a more even keel having made your post, I hope it has been of some comfort, despite being difficult.

I'm glad you have found this to be a supportive community, as have I.

I'm also glad you been utilising 1800 RESPECT, I have called them a couple of times when I've been at really low ebbs and found them to be really great.

I hope you feel you can reach out here if and when you need/want to.
