Talking through trauma and PTSD

A lifetime of pain

A lifetime of pain

Bare with my while I share this, my brain is flooded with thoughts so things might be a bit messy with how they are written.

TW: Disclosure of abuse (SA), suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

Content/trigger warning

From a young age I was exposed to being physically and sexually abused, combine that with the emotional abuse and it's left me with lifelong trauma. I was made to believe it was my fault, that it wasn't that bad, that it didn't matter and that I shouldn't talk about it. These incidents happened while I was in a Christian school, at different ages by different aged groups of men some my age at the time being 9 years old others being older than me, there were students, teachers, strangers that I didn't know. It never seemed to end, it went on for years with no indication that it was ever going to stop, how was I to get myself out of this, who would listen, who would believe me when my voice didn't matter. It only ended when I left school, I had to, I couldn't stay there, I couldn't keep being hurt.

Fast forward a while and I found relationships but I wasn't looking for a partner but rather a father figure something I had lacked all my life. This lead to being further abused as I sought out men that were considerably older than me, wanting to felt cared for, to feel safe but instead I was hurt. So I escaped one lot of abuse only to continue to experience another, was this all my life was going to be like, was this what I deserved, was this just normal?

All my life I've sought friendships that have been of varying age groups for different reasons. Younger friends to feel as though I had siblings to grow up with and so that i still felt like i had a childhood, older friends so that I felt like I had an auntie or a mother figure that cared and wanted to protect me. Now I find myself alone with only a couple of friends that I communicate with but none that I can physically see due to the distance between us.

Come to today and life's still in shambles, there's still ongoing abuse by various people including a family member. I've been seeking help, trying to learn to live with a lifetime full of trauma, trying to make sense of why it's been like this. It's not easy, trying to find someone that truly understands what I've been through, why I'm the way I am and to then be able to help me to recover if that's at all entirely possible.

I'm grateful that I'm still here given others have tried to fatally hurt me, then there's the attempts of ending my own life. But it's a struggle, flashbacks are triggered by the simplest of things, a word, a smell or taste, a sound, a name it can be anything and it can hit without warning, they can last minutes, hours or even days. I've used self harm to cope throughout my life and still do as it's the one thing I can control when everything else is spiralling around me. I know it's not healthy and I've tried to find other alternatives, sometimes I'm lucky and something will work for a while but then it stops and it's back to square one.

Anyway I think that's enough for now, I'm sorry for the long read and if it's confusing. Thanks for reading and I'm glad I'm here, this community seems to be amazing and supportive so thankyou to everyone I've talked to so far.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@AlwaysMyself OK. I have had a few things happen lately, things I know are not right. It has been playing on my mind. I cant trust to open up to anybody for I know I would be judged.

Re: A lifetime of pain

I know you are very careful with anything that could be potentially used by people who know you to identify you. Keeping this is mind as I chat with you, and understand that your answers may need to be very vague or generalised for this

@RebelliousAngel

I can promise that I won't put judgement onto you. I see you are worried, I see you are in pain. We all have things we are scared or ashamed of; we are all imperfect.

If you would like to share whatever you feel able to, you are welcome to. But no pressure to.

I'm sitting with you here either way.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@AlwaysMyself I am confused and I do not understand things that are occurring to me. I feel conflicted with the feelings and afraid of why they are there.

I am sorry I don't feel as though I am making sense. I am going to go. I hope that you can find sleep soon. Thanks for talking to me I am sorry I was a bother.

Re: A lifetime of pain

You are not a bother at all @RebelliousAngel . I'm glad I was still online when you posted.

I can imagine that it would be very scary and confusing to not understand things that are happening. It can hard sometimes to pinpoint where our feelings are coming from and what may be "under the surface".

I sense that this is really difficult for you to talk about. No pressure to. And never judgement.

Wondering what helps you calm down best?

No problems if you are heading off. I hope you can find something calming for the anxiety/fears, and can get some sleep also.

Re: A lifetime of pain

Hi all, it has been a long time since I have been able to get on here. I hope that everybody is doing okay.

I am having a very bad night after something happened to me. Trying to get sleep but have not been able to turn my brain or emotions off.

Re: A lifetime of pain

Hi @RebelliousAngel

I hear that tonight sounds really heavy for you. Whatever happened feels like it has stayed with you in such a big way that your mind and emotions do not feel able to slow down enough to rest, and being stuck awake with all of that can feel incredibly exhausting and lonely.
I'm really glad you reached out instead of sitting with this completely on your own tonight. I hope you can be gentle with yourself right now and remember that you do not have to have everything figured out before reaching for support. 🤍
If these feelings get too much to carry alone, you can reach out to Lifeline or Beyond Blue.
Take gentle care,
-SunsetSunrise
