Can we talk about the mental load of "What's for dinner?" 🍽️

Can we talk about the mental load of "What's for dinner?" 🍽️

Okay, I need to know I'm not alone in this...

Does anyone else feel like the household food coordinator who never actually applied for the job?

Here's my reality ~ I ask my family what they'd like to eat. Crickets. I ask again. Maybe a shrug. Then somehow, magically, I'm expected to pull together something everyone will actually eat (and ideally, something nourishing that doesn't come entirely from packets).

The thing is - I'm not a foodie. Give me a simple omelette, some roast veggies, or a decent salad and I'm genuinely happy. But apparently, my family needs variety? Who knew? 😅

We rotate through the same meals most weeks:
•Chicken Parma & veggies
•Home cooked fish with air fryer chips
•Homemade pizza night
•Mexican mince with salad/soft tacos
•Chicken tikka masala
•Brinner (because breakfast for dinner is always acceptable)

And lunchboxes? Don't even get me started.

How do other people come up with healthy, nourishing options day after day without relying on packaged everything?

I'm genuinely curious - how do you manage this in your homes?

Do you:
Have a meal rotation that actually works?

Get your family to contribute ideas (and if so, HOW?!)

Batch cook? Meal prep? Just wing it?

Have go-to simple meals that everyone tolerates?

Or are you also sitting there at 4pm thinking "Well, I guess we're having something for dinner tonight..."?

I am noticing - when my nervous system is already tapped out from the day, making one more decision (especially about food) feels like climbing a mountain. And yet, it happens every. single. day!!!!!

So let's help each other out. What's working in your world? What's absolutely not? And please tell me I'm not the only one who considers cereal a perfectly acceptable dinner option sometimes...

Drop your thoughts, your struggles, your wins, or even just your "solidarity, friend" below.....

Blergh! Kids bring back so much of their school lunches! It's such a waste! And I don't want to get upset at them for bringing it back because my fear is that they will throw it out to 'please' my sister or I @ccau_82

Anyway, just gotta love the kids. What to do?

As for the mental load of What's for dinner? That's me at the moment. I'm hungry but I don't know what I want to eat!

Hope you are okay @ccau_82 @Appleblossom @Magpie22 @LG @GalaxyGuide

@tyme I don’t go by “what I want to eat”. I got pretty stern talking tos as a little kid.

Thanks for sharing @Appleblossom . I was never like this, but now, I spoil myself so I get to "eat what I want".

I'm so free now. No baggage. Just free as a bird 🙂 Hence I spoil the kids too - my sister's kids

Sorry @tyme too serious and austere,

you were complaining about the kids fussiness.

actually the reason I pulled out of recovery club, was all the laughter about getting uber food. I had an inner reaction of revulsion that the people who were getting paid had done so little work or had sufficient maturity to be mindful or aware of how that might seem to some people.

food is fundamental to life

spoiling people too much may have consequences for feelings of excessive entitlement

not really a sign of recovery to me
