Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

@Nala2022 Hello how are you? The rest of yesterday was awful and hard. Today I’m just in worse shape really. Just so sick of feeling this unwell.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I'm doing okay, thank you for asking @Cuddlebear 💛

I’m really sorry to hear things are feeling even harder today

It sounds incredibly exhausting to be feeling so unwell and worn down by it all.

I know it can feel like a constant battle at times. Just getting through each moment the best you can is enough, you don’t have to push yourself to do more than that right now

@Nala2022 Oh I can’t push myself for anything. Terrible nightmares again too.

Im in a low low place so hard. I just don’t know how people get through this day after day after day. I’m doing my best.

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing nightmares again @Cuddlebear

Dealing with nightmares on top of feeling so low sounds really exhausting

I can hear that you're doing your best, and right now that is enough. There's no right or wrong way to get through difficult days like these

You're not alone here💛

Hellooo @AlwaysMyself 😊, how are you going? What have you been up to?

Sorry for the big delay in reply to you! One of my biggest delays which I will confess is I was waiting for my brain to get back on board re chem talk lol. So funny I’ll be on an absolute mission looking and researching then- boom-, gone! No longer have interest or connection at that depth like I did! Interesting right? I’m a bit disappointed because in those times I feel like I am filled with lots of knowledge and now I feel like I don’t remember it all! 🤯🤪

Ah yesss NSW winning I feel is also so rare!! QLD won the 2nd game so the third will be a lot of fun to be amongst it 😀 I wonder who will win! I don’t really understand the game but I enjoy the atmosphere and I am learning bits and pieces 🤣 and it’s also been luck I have caught the games as mates have told me it’s on otherwise I would have missed both games lol!!

Yes I agree it would be good to speak more openly about specific substances in a productive way but I can also see why they won’t allow it cos I think some discussion between members would get interesting in a different way lol. I feel like we are definitely on the same page though and are both just interested about the brain and on a mission to work out what could work for our brain at a chem level, for us individually. I see where you are getting at (maybe lol) - dopamine being the biggest receptor and I find how too much or too little affects people and what symptoms they have, I find this so interesting. As with adhd, the theory is you are lacking d receptors, so if given AP meds as an example to regulate then you are blocking or reducing dopamine further, this is not uncommon practice and I find that interesting. Because for schizophrenia then AP, likely needed going off the research. How’s your trial going? I pick up what you are putting down re activation (maybe lol), has it been ok for you re your activations, re distressing/fine, visual? Auditory? Tactile? They were some of my thoughts but all good if you prefer not to cover. It’s funny as soon as I started this post slowly but surely I have been put back in my passionate zone of interest/research and curiosity so thanks for that ☺️😎. Interesting re it does touch on glutamate too, what’s your thoughts on that 😀

Oh I was about to get to the neuroplasticity/ glutamate connection and you beat me to it, but yes I find TRD interesting, my further research is buried in my brain right now which I can’t retrieve atm, once I am down the rabbit hole I’ll be sure to post to ya hehe (work early tomorrow so better go to sleep soon lol). I feel a lot more options available than before so I wonder if the current one wasn't working, were you curious about the other options available? I feel like we have come so far in all our research and options hey! I also wonder if you didn’t feel this trial helpful would see it as a wealth of knowledge knowing what your brain is or isn’t responding to re receptors/ chemicals? But I appreciate it being super difficult because we aren’t chemists or specialists in the field of all mental health medicines/treatments lol. The one that likely your GP may have mentioned I suspect if this isn’t the one you’re on right now lol (and if it was your good mental health GP who suggested lol), they are working on at least one to be further subsidised on Medicare. The medication already is on the PBS but not the consults etc which makes it expensive atm from the one I read about. I believe the treatments are an intensive at the beginning and aim to titrate down but from what I read it’s guided on patient response or therapist assessment. I have been reading about it over the last month or so. I am interested what you have been curious about?😀
Before I loose this post and get possibly signed out for taking too long to write it I’ll send this now and add the rest on (should be going to bed a bit ago but I want to finish it lol) hmm I tried a heap of different classes of MH meds, if this was what you were asking re rollar coaster and what I have and haven’t tried, most not achieving a good effect, some way worse. In the midst of the roller coaster it is possible it wasn’t picked up the meds made things worse so they were continued. I often told them my thoughts and how I felt it’s only now that I realise they probably weren’t listening and I trusted them. It really does pay to be curious on treatments because I think we really do know ourselves the best as long as we haven’t lost our insight etc. Half my problem was that I could probably not communicate it properly therefore likely misunderstood. It’s left me with a lot of mistrust but I also understand that where I have been at times has be turbulent 🌀 so circumstances and me not able to properly communicate (even though I thought I was and may have been) means that it would have been easy to miss the medication being most likely the wrong one for me. This has driven me to do my own research and continue on a quest to read and be curious with all chemicals not just brain ones 😊. I have been interested in sodium channels/ sodium channel modulators for my light reading recently ☺️ lol. It’s been interesting to read previous assessments (don’t have many, would have loved more 🙈) only have 4 lol and have reflected on previous treatments. I am beginning to think our family through generations (both sides of mine) have issues with dopamine regulation in the brain. Both too much, history of a family member with schizophrenia and recently found out it possibly skipped a generation and likely his dads mum had something similar (but not talked about, I only recently found this out) and then possible hyperactive/mixed adhd with another sibling then other side big history of mostly adhd and major depression. In my immediate family I was the only one who trialed medicine for MH, interesting right? My family don’t really trust medicine and prefer herbal stuff so it’s been a constant fight of some inherited mistrust of meds and being able to rationalise what I’m on and be prepared to sit with shame if something in the pharmaceutical range gave worse effects. However a lot of all my meds i tried during that time I didn’t tell anyone but I was constantly justifying (with myself) / assessing if I should stay on something, I have always been a strong critic of meds, if I don’t see there worth then it’s hard for me to stay on anything. I would have to say the AP as scripted ‘when needed’ for dysregulation got past me as only recently found out re adhd. So you know! The more you know the easier it could get right lol. But that one on reflection was massive!! Treat the MD with AP with really ?low dopamine no wonder that ended interesting at times 🤪. I do at times feel sad knowing this but I choose not to acknowledge it really and just focus on “okay we know this didn’t work and potentially why, what’s next”. But at times I get it it gets tiring and your threshold can be hit. I still hope for better one day I am convinced it’s out there for everyone. I’m not really sure I’m answering you question or going on a tangent hehe. I’ll sign off now but I’ll give this a read one of the next times I’m on and add to it or change it up. lol got to be awake in 4 hours 🙈🙊🥲, it was really lovely chatting though and getting my brain active and thinking about things! Take care and always lovely to see you around! I am thinking about you often and wonder where you are at. 🌼

@Flutterbug9 only just now seen the post about the air-fryer - was posted whilst I was typing my last post, and I haven’t been back since that post.

Awww, I can relate to the struggle of buying items and then finding it hard to bring them home/inside/upstairs. I struggle with my ice cream machine sometimes; I can do it short distances - but it will hurt my back and arms. But sometimes it’s worth it eh!

Have you used the air-fryer much yet? If so, how is it? Favourite things cooked so far?
