Where is my help as a parent?

Hi. Does anyone know of support services or contacts for parents living with an adult with chronic schizophrenia? She is 32, doesn’t work/can’t work because of her mental state (which has been going on for over 14 years) and has no means to live by herself. Basically we are ‘stuck’ with her. She doesn’t have friends and won’t venture out for too long. We have recently retired and never envisioned that this would be our life. She has Anosognosia (no insight into her illness) conveyed to us when she was hospitalised years back but this condition doesn’t seem to be recognised in our health system. My husband doesn’t have any patience nor real understanding of how sick she is lately and the outbursts from both of them is killing me. I just know what help/support services are out there for people in our circumstance.

Hello @Rover wellways.org may be able to help if you're in an eastern state. I dont know if they're still true to their origin as Schizophrenia Fellowship where they supported families.

Carer Gateway might help too.

There's a number of forumites caring for a partner or adult child with schizophrenia who may not interact here often, but I hope they reach out to you.

Hi @Rover, that sounds like a very difficult situation to live with and you may benefit from counselling yourself.

I’m not sure if this applies to your situation, but this may give you some ideas:

If she is hearing voices then https://www.unitingvictas.org.au/services/mental-health/hearing-voices-support/ provides lived experience support. There was a mother of a person living with schizophrenia on their Hearing Voices course I attended, and she seemed to benefit greatly from the information, insight and sense of voice hearer community support.
