Grief and loss

Lost my grandpa and my childhood dog in less than a month

Lost my grandpa and my childhood dog in less than a month

I am completely heartbroken. I lost my grandpa who I lived with my entire life on July 12th of this year. We were very close. In a span of three months, he declined physically and mentally and started having health issues including cancer, dementia and pneumonia. He was at the hospital for a month where my mom, my brother and I would take turns taking care of him. It hurt me so much to see him like that, but I did everything I could to be there for him to make sure he was receiving the care he deserved, to be an advocate, a company for him. The day he died, it was in the early hours of the morning, and we had left him with a caretaker that we hired to go whenever we really couldn’t be there, which in total she went maybe three or four times, all the rest of the time we were all there for him. I did feel so guilt about not being there when he passed, o had spent the day with him. I got a call at three in the morning saying we needed to go fast because he’s passing away and we went as fast as we could but when we got there, he had already passed. Losing him has been so hard. I’ve never lost anyone in my life, especially someone so close to I am completely heartbroken. I lost my grandpa who I lived with my entire life on July 12 of this year. We were very close. I’ve never lost anyone in my life, especially someone so close to me. He was an amazing person, great husband, father and grandfather. He was so hard-working and I am who I am today because of him.

While he was in his last days at the hospital we found out my 14 year old dog Nena has cancer and that it was already terminal. We decided not to put the chemo because it would just make her suffer and we decided to just have her with medication to keep her pain-free and supplements to help her. Last week we noticed she was already very weak. She didn’t wanna walk much, her stomach grew twice or three times in size so we called the vet. The Vet told us that it seems like her tumor is growing very fast so they did exams and yes, the type of cancer she had is very very aggressive. So he told us that we would have to put her to sleep in the following weeks. This week about three days ago, we noticed her heart was beating very very hard to the point where if she was laying down next to me and I had my head on my pillow, I can hear her heart clearly. So we called the vet again and he told us that her heart right now is working more than it should because of her cancer because of all the fluid buildup and that if we let more days pass, it come to a point where she has a heart attack, seizures, or her organs would start failing. So we decided to put her down. The vet told us we could have one more day with her that she’s not in pain. She was still eating, drinking, being a beautiful baby. She was still herself just very low energy. So yesterday we spent the whole day with her. We went out to be in the sun on the grass that she loved. She rolled around a little bit not like she used to of course. My whole family, we were just there with her sitting on the grass, we also brought her McDonald’s, she had pizza, she ate KFC, she ate so many things she received so much love. Around 9pm we told the doctor that we were ready and he came over to my house. She loved being in my room on my bed so we put rose petals all over the bed, we put a little butterfly decorations, I lit candles all over my room and we were all here. As we put her down, we were all there with her petting her telling her it’s OK to go of course we were crying, but we were told her it’s OK for her to go. We thanked her told her how much we loved her and she’s such a good girl. I am completely devastated. It hasn’t even been a month my grandpa‘s passing and I was losing my little girl. I really can’t take it anymore. She was the sweetest sweetest little girl you could imagine she stole everyone’s heart. Seeing her clothes, her stroller, her leash just there breaks my heart. She still currently here in my room, we’re waiting for the funeral people to come take her so they can cremate her. When they take her, that’s gonna be the last time I’m gonna see her.

I don’t know how to move forward. I can’t take this pain anymore. At home everywhere I look and everything I do just reminds me I’m missing my two loves.

Re: Lost my grandpa and my childhood dog in less than a month

Hi Majo, I can relate a lot to this thread. I too lost my grandparents a while back and it was tough.

I too lost a pet when my grandmother was passing. It sounded like your beautiful grandpa and beautiful dog were lucky to have someone as caring as you by their side. Please don't be hard on yourself and take your time to grieve their passing. I know it's not easy and remember that this too shall pass. It doesn't mean you will forget them. If you find yourself getting worse, please reach out again. Many hugs for your loss.
