Concerned about my daughter

Concerned about my daughter

My daughter is 33. She has been increasingly exhibiting similar behaviours as her father who is schizophrenic. He has a family history of schizophrenia on both sides. Whilst she has not had a full blown phsychotic episode, I am worried she is becoming more prone to distress and aggression that she is unable to control. I do not want to talk with her about my concerns as I think she would become even more heightened with anxiety and she would believe I am saying it to threaten her or something. However, she has been receptive to seeking counselling or psych services for her anxiety in the past. Things are complex in our lives and I don't really know what to do.

Re: Concerned about my daughter

Hi @Mumndaughter welcome to the forums.

I can hear how distressing it is for you to be observing these behaviours in your daughter, especially with a family history of schizophrenia. I think it's amazing that you're reaching out and seeking insight on ways you can best support her.

I think if she is open to seeking some therapeutic support, you could gently nudge her in that direction, even without mentioning schizophrenia or psychosis, by just making observations about her behaviours and experiences and encouraging her to seek some support. Letting her know that you are there to support her, that she deserves to have a safe space to explore her experiences, needs, and struggles, and that there's no judgement from you if she decides to seek professional help, can go a long way :)

Re: Concerned about my daughter

Thankyou Jynx. Your response is really calming and centering. I need to keep focussed on my love for her and not get caught up in my own anxiety about her and everything else in our complicated challenging lives. Your suggestions have helped to get me grounded again.

So that I can find your response, and my post, again, do I just log in and it will be there? I would like to be able to tap back into it when I need to
