Grief & Identity Loss
I am new here and have been encouraged to find online support groups as I feel quite isolated.
I am 39 and have just spent the last few years undergoing so many big transitions that I've completely lost who I am and don't know where to turn anymore.
I was experiencing some pretty bad work related burnout (common in my industry) at the same time as packing up my whole world and leaving behind my communities to relocate interstate for a long-term relationship, at the same time as both my aunty and uncle passed within 3 weeks of each other, I had a car accident and I sustained a nasty injury.
I tried taking 1 month off work when moving to try and manage the burnout but it wasn't enough. I had to process the family grief, car crash & injury whilst starting a new job, with new staff, in a new state, whilst learning to juggle living in a relationship (no longer distance), the role of being a step mother and trying to make new friends and find new gym/sport communities. I also have BPD2 & ADHD. I tried so hard to do it all but the burnout became so much worse to the point of no longer being able to function at all 18months later.
I ended up in a mental health hospital for 7 weeks with complete exhaustion, forced to quit my job and my boyfriend ended our relationship. I know we had some issues that I thought we could fix with couples therapy, but I thought he was my forever person and I am devastated that he left me, especially at my lowest point when I needed the most support. I am angry at how much I sacrificed for that relationship only to feel so easily tossed aside when I could no longer serve others needs.
I feel like my whole life just fell apart all at once. I was successful in my career that I can no longer do. I was competitive with my sports that I no longer have the energy for. I've lost all my strength & fitness, and gained medication weight that I cannot shift. And I thought I found a life long relationship that I no longer have. I don't know if I stay here and try to build the new friendships I worked so hard for and constantly be reminded that I moved here for him, or pack everything up again and move back to a place that has also somewhat moved on & changed in the 2yrs I haven't been there.
I don't recognise myself anymore. I'm really struggling with the grief & RSD from the failed relationship but because I'm too unwell to throw myself into work and sport I feel I have no distractions to help. Friends & family remind me that it was an emotionally abusive relationship that also contributed to the burnout but I just love him so much that I can only see the pain of the loss.
I feel helpless.
Has anyone got any good grief management strategies that aren't just "let it go and move on". The idea of "moving on" or being with someone else makes me feel sick. Plus I feel like I am so damaged that nobody would want to be with me now anyway...the proof is my ex leaving when my problems piled up.
How do I feel like myself again when I feel I've lost control of all areas of my life.
