Estrangement
Hi everyone,
I'm new here and wanted to reach out to see if anyone has experienced something similar.
My dad is a veteran and has PTSD. Throughout my childhood, life was often difficult as he had a very short fuse. He told me last year that he doesn't trust anyone, including his own family, and over time our relationship became increasingly strained.
My mum also displayed long-term patterns of emotionally and verbally abusive behaviour, with traits that I believe were consistent with borderline personality disorder and narcissism. Growing up between those two dynamics was incredibly difficult, and I spent many years trying to keep the peace, hoping things would change.
Eventually, after many years of trying, I made the painful decision to become estranged from both of my parents last year. My nervous system simply couldn't cope anymore. It wasn't a quick or easy decision, and at times I wonder how much my dad's PTSD contributed to our family dynamics, while also recognising that everyone is responsible for how they treat others.
I'm interested to know whether anyone else has experienced estrangement from a veteran parent or from a family affected by PTSD. How have you made sense of it, and have you found peace with your decision?
Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
