Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

I've been through it In the last 5 years, and I'm just so exhausted

I've been through it In the last 5 years, and I'm just so exhausted

Had a bit of a journey in the last few years, including a admittance to hospital in 2024 after a relationship breakdown, friendship breakdown and a workplace issue that caused me to get demoted,

Ive tried my best to try and fight, but every year new challenges present and chip away, last week I had a blindside breakup with someone I really loved, an unexpected ATO bill of 4000$ and finally to close out the week a possible resurface of a cancer I had been in remission for since 2019.

I'm just so exhausted and no clue how to manage this time, I do my best to be a good person, but I can't help but feel I somehow deserve all the bad that happens to me

I've tried all the phone services and my state is just getting worse, I really feel my absence would make everyone's life easier

Hi @lumberjack23,

It sounds like you have been through such a lot that has been outside of your control. No wonder you are tired, and that tiredness can impact your thinking too. The old advice of never making big decisions in a crisis is a wise one.

Well done for reaching out for support, it shows there is a part of you that wants to live. That is the part you need to protect and nurture. It's critically important that you keep talking about it and reaching out for support.

Have you tried Roses in the Ocean Warmline? It connects you to trained volunteers with lived experience of suicide - people who get it and are not clinical. https://rosesintheocean.com.au/peer-care-companion-warmline/

If thoughts of suicide become overwhelming, try Suicide Callback Service 1300 659 467 or if you feel you cannot stay safe call 000 - suicidal ideation tend to come in waves and your future self will thank you for reaching out for support to get you through a crisis.

Try to take a day at a time, or even an hour at a time. Grounding can help reduce distress in the moment: https://www.lifeline.org.au/get-help/support-toolkit/techniques-and-guides/finding-relief-through-grounding-techniques

Then I'd strongly urge you to get professional support from a counsellor, or a psychologist via your GP. Or drop into a Medicare Mental Health Centre https://www.medicarementalhealth.gov.au/find-a-mental-health-centre

Hang in there and let us know how things go please!

Hi @lumberjack23 welcome to the forums. I can really hear how much distress and anguish has been building up in your life lately, and it's no wonder that you are feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. It's really awful when we try so hard to do the right thing and still get hit with significant challenges.

What helped you manage in the past? Are there people you could reach out to for some support?

If you're looking for a bit of extra support along the way, you could look into our Recovery Club program and see if it's a good fit. It's all free, with telehealth support sessions and self-guided recovery planning - Welcome to SANE’s Recovery Club

I'm hearing that you've been reaching out to phone services and seeking some support along the way. Linking in with a good GP and maybe thinking about a Mental Health Care Plan might also be worth considering.

It also sounds like you're having thoughts of suicide. Many of our members do, and it's always worth talking to someone, especially if you're ever worried about your safety. You can try Lifeline:
