Shoulder to Shoulder: Veteran Families

Saw my SASR Vietnam Vet dad for first time in 15 years.

Saw my SASR Vietnam Vet dad for first time in 15 years.

Traveled from TAS to Darwin. Had to leave him in hospital. The week long visit has been healing however opening up the childhood trauma boxes is a lot. Anyone else dealing with this stuff as an adult.

Hi,

I am sorry you are going through this, and you are not alone...

Yes, my father is also a Vietnam veteran, and he had a short temper while I was growing up. Some of my memories are good, but others are quite terrible. My mother was emotionally and verbally abusive over the years as well. To be honest, they often treated me like I was their number one enemy.

Last year, I decided to go no contact with them, and although that sounds sad, it was the right choice for my family and me. I saw a psychologist for the first time late last year, and he reassured me that I am not alone in my experiences; many others go through similar difficulties. The appointment was arranged by Open Arms, and it has been incredibly helpful to talk about my experiences.
