Art Therapy

Art Therapy

Hello Everyone!

I start Art Therapy in just over a fortnight's time and would like to know if anyone has experience with it before? This will be my first time and I'm not sure if I should be diving into topics about trauma, my past, etc or should I keep it more broad and just focus on my emotions whether it's through talking and/or art making?

Do you have ideas of things I could possibly draw? My favourite medium is Oil Pastels and I am hoping I can start off with that. So far, I brainstormed drawing a pair of hands, a television, a volcano, a bottle of alcohol and a stack of money. I will be having sessions every fortnight. I'm hoping I can stay for 10 sessions.

Side note: I have Depression and Schizophrenia. Or is it Schizophrenia and Depression?

Thank you for any input. I'm very excited to start!

Re: Art Therapy

I tried Art Therapy and was so blocked I just sat there and looked at the white paper. Trying with my non dominant hand is a great idea.

thanks

Re: Art Therapy

I went hunting for some (a lot!) of Art supplies, way ahead of my Therapy session. Ended up making a Carthatic piece called 'Depression'.

The paints aren't too bad for their price - I bought them all from Kmart. And the piece made me understand Art Therapy better.

Overall, it was a good outcome and I will keep experimenting until I find a suitable way to express my emotions, before and during Therapy.

The canvas is for after Art Therapy in case I need to vent. I'm really hoping it goes well!

Re: Art Therapy

One of today's attempt at being "therapeutic" and "artistic" resulted in the invention of a new black colour. This wasn't the result I was hoping for. Left me feeling disappointed and sad, rather than experiencing a Carthartic release as it appears. Will maybe try again tomorrow, this time I will use less paint and not include black!

Re: Art Therapy

I attended my first ever Art Therapy session today! The Art Directive was to "scribble like a Kindergarten child for 5 minutes" then "draw a tree, a house, a person and the 2 elements, fire and water". I had so much fun! I was amazingly talking a lot too! We discussed my experiences with Art growing up and there were a lot of environmental pressure to NOT create Art. We hope to explore my Values later on. Now is to get me used to making/doing Art so my next fortnightly session will be directed too.

(This isn't the original Artwork I made during the session. This is a Recount of what I did. It roughly looks the same.)
