Advice from people who live with visible self harm scars
Hello 🙂 I'm just trying to figure out how to live and 'be' in the world post self-harming as someone with visible scars (I'm doing really well now). I'd be interested to hear how others manage disclosure and day-to-day clothing choices. More specifically:
- What you might say (or don't say) if someone notices or asks about them? and how to tailor this for children
- How you decide when to wear short sleeves vs long sleeves. Or should I be aiming for complete acceptance where I'm ok to wear short sleeves all the time no matter where I am?
- Lightweight long sleeve clothing options that work in warm weather, and also options to help cover the top half of my legs with clothes that actually look nice
- Any stores or brands that are good for breathable and lightweight clothes
- Any stories or advice about how you might have moved from a place of shame to acceptance around your scars
It's been such a difficult space to navigate and any help would be much appreciated! Thank you 🙂
