Grief and loss

Job loss

Job loss

My workplace decided not to renew my contract for next year, so I'll be out of a job soon. I tried to set up some volunteer work to do for next year and the whole process was a mess. I found the coordinator of the program was really disrespectful and giving him feedback just seemed to make the way he talked to me worse. Conflict is a psychosis trigger for me, so I decided having to volunteer for this person wasn't worth the risk to my mental health.

I'm still trying to work out what to do next. Between my mental health (including medication side effects), my lack of social skills and my physical disability, there aren't really options for finding a new job. I get the DSP and that's enough to survive on. I just wish I could do something to contribute to the world. I'm very discouraged by how many times I've applied for things and even unpaid roles don't want me.

I would like to hear about similar experiences, possible solutions and reassurance.

Re: Job loss

Hi @Ruby26,

that volunteer co-ordinator sounds like he is in the wrong business! As far as similar experiences go, yes, I have had a lot of rude and demanding bosses who caused me to change jobs frequently. I have never regretted leaving a job for one minute. I think you did the right thing, it might have only gotten worse.

It's very tiring looking for positions, even for volunteer work. If you know of any op-shops that you enjoy visiting as a customer, then maybe try there. If you are having a good customer experience than that might indicate they have good management. Maybe also animal shelters or community centres or even libraries? Someone else might have some better ideas.

You are a good person for wanting to help others. The right role will come along, I think. Be gentle with yourself, but persevere.

Re: Job loss

@DahliaDreams thanks for your support. These are some great ideas!

I've looked into op shops. With my physical disability, I'm not able to do the tasks that they require from volunteers. From a social standpoint it would be ideal though, as I know which local ones are toxic and which ones seem great. It's just a shame I don't have the mobility for them.

Animal shelters are something I could try. I have a phobia of dogs but if there was the option of volunteering just with cats or small animals that could work. Cats are so much easier socially than people.

I would love to volunteer at my local Community House. I've been involved with their activities for a while now and they've been very good to me. I'll see if they need any volunteers for Term 1 next year.

I've volunteered at the library before and that was a good experience. They found plenty of other people to volunteer who had more skills than me, so I had to move on. I think enough time has passed though that I could check in again and also try other libraries.

Thank you for calling me a good person. My family have been so judgemental of my desire to volunteer, and it has made me feel bad about myself. I appreciate you seeing it in such a positive way. You must be a good person, since you are so quick to offer kindness and brainstorming to people online.

Re: Job loss

@Ruby26 If you can get a volunteer working with children card (wwcc), a lot of schools love volunteers.

Wether it's helping students develop reading skills, helping in the library or kitchen.

Maybe contact a couple of schools in your area and ask if they need volunteers, they can also be amazing communities.

And volunteer wwc cards are also free to apply for.

Best of luck on your journey and lots of love to a kind and generous soul ❤️

Re: Job loss

@AnnoyedSheDevil thanks so much for your support. I have a WWCC and I'm keen to work around primary school children. Local schools have already said they have enough volunteers, I was on a waiting list for a year, and they never needed me. I'm looking at finding a role outside of my local area. I'm nervous as I don't cope well with travelling to unfamiliar places, but I think it is going to be worth trying. If I can get the travelling anxiety under control, there is a lot more I'd be able to do.
