Mental health recovery webinar: The Big 5 in Mental Health

️Featuring: Professor Nick Titov – The Big 5 with Mindspot

We all agree that our mental health is as important as our physical health. Unfortunately, most people are not aware of the things we can do to support our mental health, or how often we should do them. Research involving more than 20,000 Australians has identified five key actions we can do each day, the Big 5, which are strongly linked to mental health.

This presentation summarises the research evidence for the Big 5 and provides simple examples of how we can apply the Big 5 in our daily lives.

Includes a 20-minute Q&A.

About Professor Nick Titov

Nick Titov is a Professor of Psychology at Macquarie University, Australia. He has been involved in more than 100 clinical trials of psychological interventions across five countries. Nick has developed and led several digital mental health services which have deployed the interventions tested in trials into routine clinical care. He is the Founding Executive Director of the Australian MindSpot and MindSpot GP Clinics. MindSpot delivers psychological assessments and treatment via telephone and internet to more than 30,000 Australians each year. His current research interests include identifying the everyday actions people can take to support their own mental health.

Hello Forumites, thank you for being part of our community here on the Forums!

I have just watched this webinar on the Big 5 and found it really interesting and informative to say the least. It has given me some really good insights into improving and maintaining my mental health. Which at times gets challenging when dealing with all the things that life constantly throws at me and having to show up for myself and others when not always feeling at my best. They say that recovery is a journey because we grow and develop over time and it's about what we pick up along the way from our peers and those that support us. And recognising how we adapt to challenges using what we have learnt sometimes through reflection and sharing our stories like we do here on the Forums.

Prof. Nick Titov hosts a great webinar, and I encourage you all to watch it. As a Professor of Psychology at Macquarie University, he has been involved in over 100 clinic trials and brings a lot of skill and knowledge to share with us all. Also, as the founding Executive Director of the Australian Mindspot and Mindspot GP Clinics. He has come up with 5 everyday actions that people can do to support their own mental health.

The Big 5 are essentially a developmental framework which include the kinds of things we can do each day to support our mental health. Through 6 studies in two countries with over 25,000 people he has come up with over 500 identified actions that people find beneficial. The Big 5 are that 5 identified actions that have a strong relationship with mental health. And doing them 5 or more times a week for all groups of people is good for our mental health. The studies conclude that the Big 5 improves mental health and the frequency matters!

After watching this webinar ask yourself how you can use the Big 5 in your everyday life 🤔

You can find the Big 5 webinar here: The Big 5 for Mental Health

We all have strengths and weaknesses and focusing on your strengths can help you maintain actioning the Big 5!!

Here are the Big 5:

  1. Meaningful Activities
  2. Healthy Thinking
  3. Goals and Plans
  4. Healthy Routines
  5. Social Connections

I'm curious what you all think and please share in the thread!

I would love to hear what you think of the actions in the Big 5?

Focusing on your strengths what is the one that you most identify with?

How many times a week could you do these actions to improve your mental health?

Thanks @Ru-bee for sharing this webinar and starting the discussion ❤️
