Navigating the mental health system and digital mental health services online

Navigating the mental health system and digital mental health services online

Hi Co-designers,

SANE is leading a sector consortium bid on a Government-issued tender to understand the challenges for people navigating the digital mental health system.

If we are successful, we would work to identify and co-design possible technology-based solutions that would make it easier to navigate and get the support you need, when you need it without having to tell your story over and over.

I need your help.

In the comments below can you please tell me either from your experience, or the experience of your family and friends:

  1. What is it like trying to navigate/search for information and support online for mental health?
  2. What are the problems you encounter?
  3. Imagine the problems are solved, tell me what it's like in your future state?
  4. If you are feeling creative, could you draw me a diagram of what it would look (just use pen on paper and take a picture) of what the journey would look like if the problems were solved and it was easy to find the right support online, and post it in here?

If you have a few minutes to respond today that would be most helpful!

Thanks Team

Rachel

p.s. I am sorry there hasn't been an update on our forum co-design for a little while we have been hit hard by COVID in the team in the last few months, but there is a document coming very soon to share with you that summarises themes from the discussions in this space, and also the results of the survey.

We will share those with you and ask for your feedback on what the themes reveal, and that will inform our action plan to improve the forums.

Re: Navigating the mental health system and digital mental health services online

What is it like trying to navigate/search for information and support online for mental health?

It’s like opening a dictionary when you don’t even know what letter the word starts with. There is just so much but you don’t know what you should be looking at or where to start. It’s hard to know whats legit and what isnt what will actually be helpful to read vs what could actually just make you feel worse. I know when I started anxiety meds reading online about all the side effects and what could happen to you put me off a heap of times before I actually committed, but I found experience from others way more valuable than a standard list of things that could happen to me as a result, that was too scary to read…
I found legit people way more helpful in terms of what expect when you are getting help and all that. The internet when you search for mental health I reckon is all doom and gloom.

What are the problems you encounter?

I’m not sure wat you mean by this

I’m not sure again sorry @RachSANECEO

I hope my answer wasnt useless

Hey @RachSANECEO I concur with @ArraDreaming on his dictionary analogy - not only do most people not know where to start but the language (and directions) used in some places is not simple. I can only imagine how hard that is for people with dyslexia or from a cultural background where English is not their native language.

So much of what is online is complicated and 'heavy' to navigate. On our website here is an example of that. It is very crowded and not always easy to find what you are looking for.

Another problem is the (often) preference by organisations to direct people to a phone number to call. If mental health support is to be expanded then web chats/online chats need to be a massive focus. So many people look online because they either a. do not know where to go for support and/or b. find it easier to use digital services to research as well as 'talk'. It is often so much easier to connect with people through typing than it is to actually talk personally with someone.

Our Guided Service is a very good example where this could be offered ie. a text based chat rather than a phone call.

In a future state -

I would like to see a new and very much improved Guided Service to be available Australia wide:

  • To do that it definitely needs the communication, booking and groups to be overhauled and improved.
  • Having a calendar of groups (with topics) and an online appointment system for participants would be ideal.
  • Then having the option to chat via an online chat rather than over the phone would also be great.
  • The zoom groups are great but they also need to be facilitated by well trained and experienced people (having both a counsellor/psychologist and a PSW as co-facilitators would be my ideal).
  • Increasing the number of 1:1 appointments (with the ability to further increase for those needed).

Having support services available after hours would fill a very massive gap in our system. The advantage of online/digital services is they can be offered at different times and the biggest gap is definitely after hours. It is often difficult for those that work to access services and having to take time off work to do so. This is both frustrating and detrimental to recovery.

Re: Navigating the mental health system and digital mental health services online

thanks for your considered thinking here - lots to work with you on.

Totally agree with you about the problem of most websites just act like the yellow pages and you have to call for real info or to book in.

A big strength of guided is the speed to service, because we allow self referral, people fill out the form and get into the service within 7 business days or less without having to call us (a win).

However we do still have to place calls to book specific appointments, We used to offer participants the ability to book those themselves but the online direct booking was actually a major point of failure for us in the early guided service, because it made rostering staff a total nightmare.

It could be possible however, in future to have groups booked this way.

We are currently looking for solutions to the issues we are having with groups functionality in particular. Groups are difficult to manage because its a group appointment that books a single resource (peer facilitator) and needs to apply the notes from the session into multiple contact records. quite tricky technically and currently involves a lot of manual process and that allows for human error unfortunately.

Rest assured we are acutely aware of it and looking for solutions.

Can I ask what you mean by groups @Zoe7 @RachSANECEO do you mean the peer group chats?

Re: Navigating the mental health system and digital mental health services online

Hi @RachSANECEO,

With participants booking their own appointments, could a system similar to doctor online bookings work? participants booking a booking time and possibly worker? The worker only works their nominated shifts? sorry if it was already tried this way.

Hey @ArraDreaming There are groups run by Zoom as part of the Guided Service 🌞

Re: Navigating the mental health system and digital mental health services online

Agree @Miss-wish It could be set up exactly like that so you can only book a session with your counsellor/PSW on predetermined/scheduled times ie. when they are rostered on.
